Review

“Kent Rollins is one of my favorite people ever to appear on Chopped. His cowboy-gentleman manners, his jokes—but, most of all, his delicious chuckwagon cooking—needs to find its way into your heart, and onto your table. I know your family will enjoy this collection of delicious, easy recipes and stories as much as I do.” — Ted Allen, host, Food Network’s Chopped   “Kent Rollins is the real deal. This book is a humble and delicious tribute to life on the trail. With its heartwarming stories, rich descriptions, and honest, down-home recipes, you'll feel as though you're sitting by the fire, under the wide-open sky.” — Mike Mills, 17th Street Barbecue   “Ken Rollins is a modern day ‘cookie,’ a wise-acre, a secret poet, and a damned fine cook. With humor and reverence in equal measure, he opens up the cowboy's kitchen to us: There are angel-wing biscuits here, and creamy chile-based sauces, and the most epic chicken fried steak ever devised —along with the weirdest equipment list I've ever seen. (A gourd dipper and a shovel!)  In the tradition of chuckwagon cooks, he serves up the beans with a side of profoundity and wit.” — Amy Thielen, author, The New Heartland Table    “Kent and Shannon Rollins take us on the stunning journey of a chuck wagon cook.  You will want to make and eat every single one of these mouthwatering recipes. This book is complete with life lessons, home remedies, and touching stories of a tightly knit cowboy family. You will learn the cowboy code: “Don’t question the cook.”  Wise words to live and eat by! — Amanda Freitag, chef and judge Chopped “A Taste of Cowboy takes me right back to my Southern roots.  The eloquent prose and breathtaking pictures make me want to head to Oklahoma, jump on the Chuck Wagon, jingle the horses, cook on Bertha and sit around a campfire with Kent and Shannon to hear some cowboy stories.  This is the good life, and with my fast-paced world, I want to be there." — Cat Cora, cohost Iron Chef America   "Kent and Shannon have taken me along the plains of Oklahoma on their chuck wagon without my ever having set a foot there. Along the ride, I have buckled my belt more than twice from laughing so hard at their stories. If there is any book that can remove the fear of cooking from absolutely ANYONE, it is this one." — Pati Jinich, author, Pati’s Mexican Table

I own probably more cookbooks than most small local libraries. Before I purchase any cookbook, I usually thumb through the pages and see if the recipes look good. So get way too fancy with too many ingredients. Others list ingredients you can't seem to find anywhere. And then there are those where the recipes just don't sound good. This cookbook easily passed the first test. Then I started cooking some of the recipes. The recipes from this cookbook are so good that they'd probably have a devout church goer accidentally cursing after taking a first bite. This will probably be the first cookbook that I actually cook through every recipe in the book. I've already cooked through about a half dozen and none have disappointed. The steak fajita recipe is just FREAKING AMAZING!!! This cookbook is worth the price just for that recipe alone. I made his smoky chip dip and this cookbook was the first cookbook EVER to nail the consistency of the dip for a great chip dip. I plan to use the base of that chip dip recipe for the base of all my chip dip recipes. And the lemon blueberry morning cake when I first started to make it looked like the dough was going to be too thick. But after it baked up the texture of the cake was dead on!We've all had recipes where the recipe was off because the author just lumped a bunch of recipes together and probably didn't test them all like they should have. These recipes all seem well tested. The ingredients are pretty simple too. If you can't seem to find the ingredient, just head to the Latin foods or the aisle that has the Goya brand foods and you'll likely find it.My one suggestion for whoever buys this book is to get yourself a 12" cast iron pan. He calls it out in a bunch of recipes. And the nice thing is, you can get one from Lodge for pretty cheap. If you have trouble cleaning that kind of cast iron, get one of those little chain mail pouch cleaners. They work wonders. This cookbook is full of amazing recipes. And I can't wait to cook them all!

I have been waiting almost 4 months for this book to be released and delivered. I saw Kent Rollins on 'Chopped' and loved him. I had already tried his 'Sparkling Taters' and loved them so when the book finally came, I just had to try something IMMEDIATELY! Mexican Tortilla Lasagna...fast, easy, so darn good. I paired it with Fiesta Cabbage Salsa. Oh, yeah! While the lasagna was in the oven, I started reading. Cooking tips, stories, a song or two. Fantastic. And, the thing that I like best is that all the recipes are easy to make with ordinary ingredients so that I don't have to go to a specialty store for a special spice that I will never use again. I have a lot of cookbooks but I think that this one is going to be right by my old Betty Crocker cookbook as I will be using it often. I want to try almost every recipe in it. *sigh* I might even try the meatloaf recipe. And I HATE meatloaf.

What can I say? I found Kent Rollins on Youtube one day and just had a blast watching him cook and share his stories. Some may not like his way of talking but get over it! The man knows how to put on a spread and have fun doing it. I wish I could afford to have him come to my house and cook up a bunch of good chow for me and our friends. It would be a hoot! In the mean time I can't wait to make a recipe from this cookbook. The hardest thing is which one to begin with first! There are great photos and humor to go along with your cooking. I appreciate that a lot and Kent fits my style and the way I have to cook up a bunch of good food. Don't get me wrong, I have had some formal training in the culinary arts but this is the way that gets my friends attention - good food and lots of it!

Beautiful book which exceeds my expectations. The pictures and stories alone are worth the price and the appearance is like a pricey "coffee table" book. The recipes are good down-home style with a modern twist. I plan to purchase other copies for gifting.

I found Mr. Rollins' book after watching his tutorial on cowboy coffee on youtube. I've tried his technique twice, with different brands and grinds of coffee, and confirmed he KNOWS what he's talking about. I've tried several times to make cowboy coffee that tastes good. I love the simplicity, but could never get past the bad flavor. Mr. Rollins' technique nails it. It's not the "best" coffee I've ever had, but pretty darned good considering how simple the method is.As a result of my success, I have complete faith that the author knows how to cook/bake everything he's claiming...............so I ordered his book. I'll update my review after I receive the book and try a few recipes. For those who question my rating prior to reading the book.............I'd normally agree. But in this instance, I've got NO doubts my five star review will remain unchanged.

I received this book today and immediately started reading it. I read the dedication and the acknowledgments then on to the stories. THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. Kent talks about the people he has met. My favorite is Leon.. Titled "Leon goes to church". I was reading it aloud and my husband was just laughing. I told him, this is like a great story book with recipes, rather than a recipe book and some stories. I can honestly say, This is the first recipe book I have actually read. I have other recipe books i just glance through until I see something i may like. I would definitely recommend this book !!! and the price is great !!!

This is one of those rare "keeper" books... definitely not one to be given the "once over lightly" treatment and then passed on. The stories are gems that bring up vivid thoughts of an almost-gone era of Americana. And the recipes are easy to follow and good! I have tried several so far and intend to use them all.Well worth the money, and a long, hard look..
