I normally prefer to buy used copies of books, and the earlier the edition, the better! However, in the case of Crockett's _Card Weaving_, I would strongly recommend purchasing the newer edition, even if that means buying a new copy rather than a used one. The first edition, from the 1970s, provides a reasonably good introduction to the history of the craft and its basic maneuvers, but the sample patterns are unclear and not especially attractive. If this were my first introduction to the craft, I would not be particularly interested to learn more -- especially compared to the gorgeous, intricate examples of tablet weaving you can find on sites such as Pinterest. The updated version, which I found at the public library, has better pictures & patterns, and the overall organization of the book is better. Working through the 1991 (newer) edition will give you a much more coherent sense of how the craft operates.

I got this book because I am interested in learning more ancient ways of weaving. I am a weaver on various types of looms, and thought card weaving might be interesting to explore as it's represented around the world and in very cool patterns. The book is set up giving a history of card weaving, some nice background and examples through the ages and in various countries, and then getting into basics and more complicated patterns and techniques. If you're interested in learning the basics of tablet/card weaving, this is a pretty good book and offers more to the weaver than just patterns. It's a cool way to see how a specific craft links us back to ancient peoples and cultures.

I have been looking for this book for about twenty years. I picked up a copy of the first edition at a close out sale table in the seventies, and even made a few successful trial weavings, but time and activity in other crafts found it pushed to the back of the bookshelf, and over the course of changing houses several times, the book was lost. Then, as time passed and disabilities happened, I had to drop many of the crafts that I had learned over the years and I recalled cardweaving, a craft that required little space, no expensive equipment, and produces fantastically beautiful, but really useful results, so I began to look for the book again with no luck. It could not be found at any of the local libraries and bookstores, so I gave up the search, then, one day when searching for Kumihimo supplies, I ran into mention that the author had put out a new edition. So I went to amazon and found not only the new edition, but even copies of the old edition. Naturally I picked the new edition.I haven't had time yet to gather the materials for my first try this time, but remembering back to the seventies, I can say that the instructions are clear and it is easy to get started for the first time. As I recall, the results were spectacular with very little effort.I'm really glad that I found this book again, and the new edition is even better than the old one. The large paperback format gives more space for pictures and the all-important how-to illustrations. So, to a person interested in textile, crochet, or other similar handcrafts, I highly recommend this book.

Very easy to follow instructions. Great Book. With pictures and diagrams to follow. Very well explained. Can't wait to get started with the weaving.

Can't say enough about this book. Simple, easy to follow directions, lots of pictures, and wonderful little hints for new weavers. Can't wait to try my hand and cards. Please, if you are thinking of trying this age old craft, take time to read this book.

a lot about the history but not enough about patterns and drafting them.

Nice book with great extant references to card weaving. Thank you!

This book Card Weaving was perfect to learn the basic craft of card weaving, and I learned it in less than 2 weeks. I needed this info to learn the craft to show at a Viking Reenactment camp at a faire. Most had never seen card weaving before. The instructions are easy to learn, and if I can learn it from a book, so can you! I look forward to getting beyond the basics and developing my own patterns, also explained in this book.
