In a reassuring bedtime story by a beloved picture-book illustrator, little James learns how his dark room can be a fun and fanciful theater for shadow pictures.
Mommy and Daddy come running when eerie, flickering shapes give James a fright. Is there a MONSTER in his room? No, just shadows. James's parents can make shadow shapes, too-and soon a menagerie of friendly shadow animals dance across his bedroom wall, acting out a funny story.
Now James is not afraid anymore, but he can't resist a little shadow play himself before snuggling down to sleep. This endearing story about comforting childhood anxieties will ring true to any parent and provide inspiration for hours of family fun-at bedtime or anytime.

At the start of Chorao's (Here Comes Kate) somewhat slim story, the moon shines through the rustling curtains of James's bedroom window, creating shadows that look like monsters to the frightened child. When the boy's father pulls the curtains back, only a luminous square on the wall by James's bed remains, which serves as the backdrop for a shadow play. The youngster's parents reassure him using shadows made by their hands to depict the shapes of various animals in a brief adventure. Though the easy-to-imitate shadow play gives the tale some dimension, the narrative is flat and rather listless ("Elephant was walking by and heard [two spiders talking]. He took them on his trunk and waved them high in the air. `Now we are bigger than anyone, even Alligator,' [the spiders] said. Everyone laughed. Ha-ha"). Chorao's artwork, on the other hand, achieves an appealing balance of the real and the fanciful. She creates lifelike images of the endearing James and his parents, and pairs closely focused pictures of pairs of hands creating the animal silhouettes with full-color animated critters that act out the story-within-a-story below. Though uneven, this work may well spark the imaginations of aspiring shadow players. Ages 3-6.

PreS-Gr 1-Tucked into bed, James notices that when a breeze blows the curtains, they create shadows on the wall that look like monsters. His parents reassure him by showing him how to make shadow puppets and tell him a bedtime story, not a scary one, using shadow puppets. Chorao creates a "stage" by framing the shadow play in white squares surrounded by an outline. The story is further animated by illustrations below the white frames that parallel the telling of the tale. After the child is back in bed, he is once again afraid to be in the dark, until he puts his whole self to the light and makes a great big shadow monster, and then copies all of the characters his parents used in the story. Confident and fearless, he unties the curtains and lets them "flip-flap" in the wind. Readers will see how to make a snail, spider, bird, goose, dog, alligator, and elephant with a patch of light and their hands. Perceptive children will also see shadows created by many objects in James's room, such as his stuffed animals, dresser, and bookcase. Chorao's combination of cheerful illustrations and text results in a flawless blend for a bedtime read-aloud. The large-scale art and spare wording also make this story appropriate for storytimes. A successful approach to addressing a child's fear of nighttime and scary shadows that appear in the dark.-Olga R. Kuharets, Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County, NC
