There is a prologue and epilogue that frame the story very nicely. Saint Hildegard, a German abbess, receives several volumes that contain information about Hypatia. The story begins and ends with Hildegard’s exploration of Hypatia’s life and teachings.The book especially excels at conveying the culture and society of Alexandria in the fourth century. The author does not shirk away from exposing unsavory information about Roman society. For example, it is made clear that as a woman, Hypatia was considered property of her father. The silver lining is that Hypatia’s father seemed to successfully twist a draconian system to support progressive ends, where Hypatia was made his protégée. Hypatia’s father worked and taught at the Library of Alexandria.The story culminates with the unconscionable violence that occurred while the Roman government weakened and Theophilus controlled the archdiocese in Alexandria. The violence is not skirted around, but it is tastefully handled and never graphic, making the book quite suitable for a younger audience.As a child, Hypatia meets and befriends Rachel, a Jewish girl close to her own age. Their friendship continues throughout Hypatia’s life, and while never converting to Judaism, Hypatia embraces Rachel’s Jewish heritage and even attends synagogue. Their friendship is what connected me the most to the book on an emotional level. The section where the great Library of Alexandria burns is also an especially well written scene where the reader can could emotionally connect with Hypatia.One area for improvement might be to temper the background information included in the dialogue with more realistic dialogue. For example, when Hypatia is five years old the conversation she has with her father is too advanced for a five year old. Cultural and historical background information may be best presented in other ways. There is also a stray typo here and there, though it did not bother me while reading and did not get in the way of the content or understanding.Hypatia is the latest release in Rockefeller’s Legendary Women of World History series, and loyal readers of the series will appreciate that Hypatia includes a hat tip to Boudicca, the Celtic queen of the Iceni and another heroine in the series.

I love books about important people in the past, and this book fans the flames of my love even more. Hypatia is an amazing woman, she pursued her destiny with great vigor and wisdom. In a time when written documents were so expensive, an oral tradition was essential for the transmission of knowledge. Hypatia gave her life to share and preserve knowledge gathered during her too short time on earth.Laurel has done a phenomenal job of capturing the life and times of religion and politics of this age, I felt like I was learning in Hypatia’s school of philosophy.Even if there was no historical fiction based on the life of a real person, the contents of the Appendix are quite staggering, Laurel has gathered so much information including a timeline, bibliography, and more. If you are a fan of ancient Roman and Greek history this is a must-have volume for your library.I give Hypatia of Alexandria a score of 4.8 stars, the score would have been higher except for the handful of spelling errors I found.

A brief but very intense account of the life of a female philosopher and her lasting impact on education, changing beliefs and events of her day. Suitable for upper middle school age readers and older, this interesting introduction to Hypatia will cause the reader to desire to know more.This book quickly takes us from Hypatia's early understanding that her life was not meant for traditional female roles. Taken under her father's tutelage, her quick mind and open acceptance led her to circles where ideas and possibilities were discussed. She did not judge people based on artificial measures. These were violent times and religious intolerance was rampant. Hypatia used her position and connections as best she could. Sadly, she could not save those closest to her.I was fascinated by the astronomical discoveries and the discussion about learning having it's own benefits and rewards.I accepted this book for review. The opinions expressed are my own.

While fiction, the author clearly and concisely provides a credible backdrop to the struggles of a woman who lived in ancient times and fought the restraints and religious tyranny of her period. Laurel Rockefeller demonstrates a high degree of expertise and knowledge of ancient history in her series, The Legendary Women of World History. This read was over before I knew it and it left me yearning for a time machine as I would love to go back in time and explore that century. There is violence but it is done in a way that won't upset the stomach. 2 month old loves it! And a 3 year old loves it! Both are wowed and like this pet face book better than the black and white shapes book.

This book combines the 2 things that never fail to hold a new baby's interest: faces & contrast.POSITIVES:-BENEFICIAL. You really can't go wrong buying this as, although it is simple, it mesmerizes babies while stimulating their brain growth.-NOT AGE-SPECIFIC. My son is almost 3 months old & continues to enjoy looking through the pictures as I make up stories about each one.-STURDY. I appreciate that it's a board book that will withstand use over time. It's also nice to be able to prop the book up for babies to examine during tummy time, etc.NEGATIVES:-Would love for this book to have just a few more pages.-Upon delivery, one of the pages did have a small crease down the center. Not a big deal & doesn't significantly alter the overall picture, but worth mentioning.

I bought this for my two month-old baby and she is enthralled by this book! The images are awesome and she seriously perks up so much when I show her the pages. Her little feet get kicking like crazy and her eyes get big. I love that it's a board book. It makes it more durable and packable since we bring it with us often. I would definitely recommend this!

The first time she saw it, she was actively engaged, but for repeated use she seems to prefer Erin Balzer's black and white books (those do have a religious lean though, so some may not like that). But my baby definitely likes more variety than I thought she would, so I do recommend getting a few black and white ones. My baby started them at 2 weeks (before she was too sleepy) and is now 1 month. We only really look at 1 a day, but she is focused throughout the entire book. The only other book she has that attention for the pictures (besides these black and white ones) is a song book, Jesus Loves Me with illustrations by Tim Warnes. I don't know why since those are in color. She will listen to other books and look at me engaged if she does not like/see the pictures. I also recommend Goodnight Moon. I was surprised to see that she had the attention span to listen to the book, but she only likes the black and white pictures.I love Phyllis Limbacher Tildes' art, but I don't like the last pages of the black and white books either. It is a picture of a baby looking at a mobile. It is just okay. I do think it's worth it to see her light up like she just saw the most amazing thing, I just wish the last page was more black and white animals.

My husband thinks the pictures in this book are some CIA mind control for the baby, he stares at them totally hypnotized. I wish there were some words that went with it that I could read to him, but I just kind of make stuff up. The images definitely hold his interest for a while though, he's 4 weeks old and I'm eager to watch him progress with what types of books he likes. I'm glad these exist because I wanted to start him on reading at a young age!

The best few dollars I've ever spent! I bought this for my son when he was just a few weeks old. Those first few weeks are rough, since newborns can't really focus their eyes on much. Once he was able to start focusing on things, he really enjoyed this book!No, there aren't any words in it, and it is only 10 pages, and 8 are animal faces. They aren't super simple images compared to the Look Look book. They are a bit more detailed.I liked setting up the book in his pack n play so he could look at it. And I'd also flip through the pages for him and tell him what the animals are, or make animal sounds for him.

My baby loves this book, currently she is 2 months old and even at 1 month this book fascinated her and kept her attention very well for many minutes. The pictures are pretty life-like. No words which is fine with us. The book is durable and well-bound. Great for infants since high contrast and I'm sure older babies would enjoy too as they could learn the names of the animals. Has 8 to 10 different baby animals, one per page. For less than 4 bucks it's well worth it to me.

I bought this book before my daughter was born because I know babies love black and white pics at an early age. We have a Dalmatian so she loves the cover. She is 18 months and still loves this book. Now I say, what sound does this animal make? And she says "baa" for the sheep pic. Too cute!! Glad I bought it!!
